Hair Removal with IPL or Laser? We Ask Beauty Expert Refika Başar

Smooth skin instead of constant, annoying shaving and unsightly stubble is a desire shared by many. Hair removal is no longer just a women's issue. An increasing number of men is opting for permanently smooth skin on their backs, chests and underarms. With autumn fast approaching, permanent hair removal is once again in high demand at AIVA in Berlin. But which is better, IPL or laser? And what exactly are the differences? We spoke to our beauty expert and beautician Refika Başar about this.

Beautician Refika Başar explains whether IPL or laser treatment is more effective.

Why Is Hair Removal a Recurring Topic – Not Only for Women?

R. Başar: Hair removal is a topic that is closely related to body image and self-confidence – and one that applies to both men and women. Many of our customers simply feel more well-groomed with smooth, beautiful skin. For men, it's often about unwanted hair on the back, for women, it's usually the legs, underarms or bikini line. In addition, permanent hair removal eliminates the need for constant shaving, which can be stressful for the skin.

At AIVA in Berlin, we work with the MeDioStar diode laser instead of IPL, enabling us to achieve long-lasting results.

What is IPL And How Does This Technology Work?

R. Başar: Before treatment, I am often asked: Which is better, IPL or laser? The answer is clear: the diode laser. While we can work with maximum precision and high effectiveness using the laser, IPL usually produces less satisfactory results. The abbreviation IPL stands for ‘Intense Pulsed Light’. It involves broad-spectrum light with multiple wavelengths being directed onto the skin, where it is converted into heat, destroying the hair roots. The procedure works well on light skin and dark hair – but the smaller the colour difference between skin and hair, the less effective the hair removal. IPL treatments therefore often require many sessions.

What Sets Hair Removal with a Diode Laser Apart?

R. Başar: The MeDioStar diode laser we use at AIVA works with concentrated, monochromatic light. Put simply, it is much more targeted than IPL. The laser can be adjusted to suit the skin and hair type as well as hair colour and thickness. The concentrated laser beam targets the hair follicles, leading to fast and permanent results.

Hair-free, smooth and attractive – hair removal with diode laser.

IPL or Laser – What Are the Main Differences?

R. Başar: The biggest difference lies in precision and effectiveness. IPL uses widely diffused light and is less effective at depth, whereas the diode laser is pinpoint accurate and reaches the hair root deep down. In addition, when used professionally, the diode laser is safer for darker skin types and often requires fewer sessions than IPL treatment.

Can Hair Removal Cause Side Effects?

R. Başar: As with almost all cosmetic treatments, hair removal can cause side effects, whether with IPL or laser. However, these rarely go beyond mild itching or redness of the treated skin areas.

Which Areas of the Skin Can the Diode Laser Be Used on?

R. Başar: Anywhere unwanted hair grows! Even sensitive areas of the body such as the intimate area or the face can be treated with a laser to remove hair. Legs, back, armpits, arms, bikini line and unwanted beard growth: permanent hair removal delivers long-lasting results everywhere.

How Much Does Permanent Hair Removal Cost?

R. Başar: Prices vary depending on the body part and the size of the area being treated. Our price list clearly shows the different zones and individual costs. It is important to note that prices are per session. However, as several sessions are usually necessary, we also offer various packages that work out slightly cheaper overall.

Why is Permanent Hair Removal Especially Worthwhile in Autumn and Winter?

R. Başar: We perform a particularly large number of hair removal treatments in autumn and winter, as many women and men want to prepare early for the next summer season and show off smooth skin on the first warm days of the coming summer. The autumn months are also ideal because the skin is less exposed to the sun, which reduces the risk of pigmentation disorders and makes the skin more receptive to light treatments. So, if you start now, you can look forward to smooth skin next year – without having to shave, wax etc.!

Thank you very much for your time, Refika!
