Pelvic Floor Training After Childbirth – When Does it Make Sense?

Pregnancy is a miracle performed by a woman's body – but it is also very demanding, as the growth of the baby in the womb puts a considerable strain on the body as a whole and the pelvic floor in particular. After the baby is born, many women experience pelvic floor weakness, which can be uncomfortable in everyday life. When pelvic floor exercises are useful and advisable after childbirth can vary from woman to woman. It is important to have a medical check-up beforehand so that training can start when the body has sufficiently recovered from pregnancy. At AIVA in Berlin, we offer the possibility of pelvic floor training with EMSELLA®, which is highly effective and time-saving. Please feel free to make an appointment.

Why can pregnancy cause pelvic floor weakness?

Several factors contribute to the changes in the body during pregnancy, and this is particularly noticeable in a weakened pelvic floor:

  • Hormonal changes: During pregnancy, the hormones oestrogen and progesterone are released in greater quantities. These ensure that the tissue becomes softer and more elastic. This loosens the pelvic floor, especially directly before birth.
  • Increased strain: The extra weight of the growing uterus, baby, placenta and amniotic fluid puts pressure on the pelvic floor.
  • Posture: Since the abdominal muscles cannot be subjected to too much stress during pregnancy, the pelvic floor compensates to keep the body stable.

Last but not least, a natural birth puts considerable strain on the pelvic floor as the baby passes through the birth canal.

When is Pelvic Floor Training Advisable After Pregnancy?

In the first few weeks after the birth, parents focus exclusively on their baby, and that is a good thing. The new family grows together, and during this time the uterus gradually shrinks, returning to its pre-pregnancy size after about six weeks. Many women soon notice that they leak urine involuntarily, for example when they cough or sneeze – a typical sign of a weak pelvic floor after childbirth.

Women who feel fit and well can start their first gentle and light postnatal exercises just a few days after giving birth.

Active recovery, for example as part of a course or through EMSELLA® at AIVA, is generally recommended six to eight weeks after a natural birth and eight to twelve weeks after a caesarean section.

Which Pelvic Floor Training is the Right One?

It does not matter when you start pelvic floor training after giving birth: The important thing is to find exercises that you can do well and that you can fit into your everyday life with a baby. Postnatal classes usually last only a few weeks and take place once a week for an hour. This is not enough time to strengthen the pelvic floor consistently. Instead, exercises need to be done every day to have an effect. This can sometimes be stressful and almost impossible to do if there are small children in the household.

EMSELLA®: effective, time-saving, enjoyable

EMSELLA® training at AIVA in Berlin is an alternative for all women who want to make pelvic floor training easier and more effective without spending a lot of time on it. It is an innovative, non-invasive treatment method for strengthening the pelvic floor using a special chair that generates electromagnetic waves. These stimulate the pelvic floor muscles and cause intense muscle contractions. The treatment is not painful and is often found to be pleasant. A session lasts about 20 minutes and can produce up to 11,000 supramaximal contractions. This means that pelvic floor training with EMSELLA® is many times more effective than conventional exercises – and shows results after just a few sessions.

When you can start pelvic floor training with EMSELLA® after childbirth will be decided after a medical examination. As a rule, this is possible as early as eight weeks after a spontaneous birth.

EMSELLA® is useful for strengthening the pelvic floor after birth, initially on a weekly basis. In order to maintain the strengthened pelvic floor in the long term, it is advisable to repeat the training at longer intervals. The specialists at AIVA will be happy to advise you.
